The following discussion applies to all versions of mControl v1 and v2, which use the same licensing scheme. Additional information can be found in your mControl v2 User Manual.

Step 1 - Installing mControl Licenses
If you have purchased mControl on a CD and you use the CD to install mControl, then this license will be automatically installed. All you will have to do is activate the license to your machine.

If you have already installed mControl, for example via a trial, then you will need to copy the purchased license to the proper location.

If you have purchased mControl on a CD, you'll have to copy the file called "mServer.exe.lic.cpy" from our CD, rename it to "mServer.exe.lic" and replace/overwrite the trial license located in the \server directory (also named "mServer.exe.lic"). [Refer to section "mControl License from a Purchased CD" of the mControl v2 User Manual - page 57]
If you have purchased mControl via an online reseller and you receive a license in an email, you'll have to copy the file ("mServer.exe.lic") and replace/overwrite the trial license located in the \server directory (also named "mServer.exe.lic"). [Refer to section "mControl License from an Online Purchase" of the mControl v2 User Manual - page 58]Once the license is in place, you'll have to restart mControl.

Step 2 - Activating mControl Licenses
A purchased license comes "unactivated" - you will have 10 days to activate it. If you do not activate it in this period, it will expire and you will have to contact Embedded Automation to get a replacement license (see Step 5).

There are two ways to activate mControl:

1. [Recommended] Automatic [Web] Activation - this is the simplest way to activate mControl. Your mControl installation automatically will connect with our license activation server to download the proper keys via a web connection - no human intervention is required. There are two ways to do an automatic (web) activation in mControl:

[Recommended] mControl Editor - navigate to the "About" tab and press the "Auto Activate" button.
mControl client for Internet Explorer/MCE 2005 - navigate to http://localhost:29990/webactivation.aspx (http://localhost:29990/webactivation.aspx) page and press the "Activate" button for the "Automatic via web" field.2. Manual Activation - recommended only if:

You do not have internet access (to allow web activation)
If your network/hardware configuration is frequently changing. To get manual activation keys, please email Embedded Automation support one or more of the following pieces of information:

The "Product ID" information in the "About" tab of the mControl Editor
The "Activation Information" located in the bottom-left of the http://localhost:29990/webactivation.aspx (http://localhost:29990/webactivation.aspx) pageEmbedded Automation will email you back key codes and steps to activate mControl.

Once activated, the license will be tied to your PC's hardware and network configuration. An activated mControl license can not be used on another PC.

Step 3 - Backup Activations
Each purchased license includes 2 activations. One for daily use and one as back up activation.

Always keep your mControl CD or the email you received when you purchased mControl - this includes a back-up activation.

Should your activation license be lost (e.g., your hard drive crashes), you can use your back up license in this manner:
>> Reinstall mControl
>> Re-install the original license (as you did before in Step 1) to the \server directory
>> Re-activate the original license (as you did before in Step 2)
>> Since you've now used up your back-up activation, to get another back-up, you'll have to send information about your license to Embedded Automation so they can give you another back-up activation by incrementing the allowed activation count on the server. Specifically, you'll have to send in one or more of the following:

The "Product ID" information in the "About" tab of the mControl Editor
The "Activation Information" located in the bottom-left of the http://localhost:29990/webactivation.aspx (http://localhost:29990/webactivation.aspx) page
Copies of your log files
The output from the http://localhost:29990/diagnostic.aspx (http://localhost:29990/diagnostic.aspx) page
A zipped copy of your original license fileStep 4 - Moving mControl
If you are moving mControl to a new PC: reinstall mControl on your new machine, and then follow the instructions in Step 3.

Step 5 - Replacement Licenses
If you have lost your original CD or the email from your online purchase, Embedded Automation can provide a replacement license. Please send us, one or more of the following:

I moved my license to my computer in my formal living room. It ran with the 30 day activation and I copied my exe.lic file in the server folder. It shut down my 30 day trial and deactivated the adapter. I should have had 1 backup activation on it. I do not know why it did this.

Please help!
