I have been using BAT files + POWEROFF + mControl to help me save power on computers when not use. For example, when I ARM-Away the house, mControl gets triggered to turn down the thermostat temp and shut down 3 computers (Office, Bedroom HTPC, Family ROOM HTPC). Of course, you can create a macro to run a BAT file to WOL too.. resuming the computers to their on state when the security system is DISARMED.

POWEROFF can be found here:

The site also describes how to create BAT files to control PCs (standby, reboot, power down, monitor off, etc.). You can even run programs (or close them) on remote computers.

The combination of mControl and POWEROFF (via BAT file macros) is pretty powerful.
